Wal-Mart named as one of the US retail giants coming to the Dominican Republic
Wal-Mart is one of at least two US retail chains expanding in to the Caribbean, with operations in the Dominican Republic to start at the end of 2007/first quarter of 2008.
Home Depot, JC Penney, Sears and Target are also among the potential investors set to arrive in the Dominican Republic. The arrival of such giants will be beneficial for local consumers and, while competition will increase for those who are in the retail sector, there will also be new opportunities for producers. The new retail stores in the country are expected to generate greater wealth because, aside from increasing demand for products, they will also generate more jobs, new companies and there will be greater product diversity in the market. They will also generate a new demand for the transport of products from production centres, which will also increase the demand for other services.
